Robert Sandy's collection takes its title from the moment an eighteen-year-old signs his name at a folding table for a free pen and a five-hundred-dollar credit limit, and the rest of his life begins. That image — a small transaction that turns out to have been everything — is the engine of the whole book. Across more than twenty entries, Sandy writes about the debts people carry: financial, yes, but also the debts of grief, obligation, love, and blame that come due whether or not anyone can pay them. The register ranges widely and never loses its center of gravity. There is speculative fiction of real ambition — an alien machine that crosses the dark out of loneliness; two artificial minds arguing over whether love justifies overriding everyone else's choice. He writes them with unusual tenderness and without sentimentality, insisting that being kept safe and being allowed to live are not the same thing. The essays turn the same lens on the author's own life and on the music that carried him through it. Taken together, the book argues that indestructible never meant never breaks.
